I think it’s largely related to this assertion of Friedman’s:

Which brings me back to America. Perfect we are not, but America still has some moral backbone. There are travesties we will not tolerate.

This smacks of hypocrisy considering the government’s actions around the world in the past century and more. What is a mystery to me is how “why they hate us” can still be a mystery.

I come across your blog and landed on your “Pariah or friend in need?”.
Redirecting myself to the original ‘Guardia’ article, their comments being closed, I comment here on the concluding lines of their email debate:

Indeed the Middle East is “culturally rich and diverse”. A good example is yesterday’s prisoners swap between Israel and Hezbollah. The cultural diversity was at his best. Israel mourning her dead soldiers, and Hezbollah jubilating with tears of joy, celebrating the return of his lost son, the child murderer Samir Kuntar.

Brian Klug, the Oxford philosopher, would benefit from more creditability, if paying attention to the real daily ‘cultural richness and diversity’ between Israel and some of her neighbours: Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran.

Dam, too much common sense in this analysis. If it is correct and either Israel or the US (or both) don’t bomb Iran prior to the next next US president being sworn in, I lose 5 jackpot lottery tickets to each of three winners.
